4 Reasons to Create a Pitch Deck Even If You Don’t Have a Script

Are you sitting here thinking: I don’t have a script or project to work on with the Art of the Pitch Deck, so it wouldn’t serve me to take the workshop? Or, is it: you don’t have a script yet and need that before you make your pitch deck and lookbook?

I hear this, and I’d love to suggest a few counterpoints to why working on a pitch deck and learning the tools to create a solid pitch deck right now is a great investment of your time and money.

Reason 1: Get Paid to Write YOUR Script

With the way the film market has been trending, filmmakers are securing funding just for the idea behind their project and less with the script itself. Scripts typically get edited by to serve the budgetary and creative perspective of the financiers or the people with the final say. However, the major concept and world behind the film doesn’t change. By having a pitch deck for a script you’re working on, you have a tool to aid getting funded or paid to write your script.

Reason 2: Pitch Decks Help Clarify and Inspire Your Story

When crafting your pitch deck, you get to wrestle with your logline, summary, character breakdowns and the like to really dive into and understand the story you are telling. All of this work helps to better understand your story. PLUS, you will then be looking at images to figure out who the characters are, what their world is like, and how you might experience the story. This can be major writing inspiration! Nothing like coming across an image that sparks a new understanding and excitement about telling your story.

Reason 3: Hone the Skills Now to Be Ready for When You Do Need a Deck

The Masters are constantly honing their filmmaking and storytelling skills. Articulating your creative vision on the page is one major way to continue honing your craft as a filmmaker. It will shift how you view and experience your research, help you strengthen your communication skills, and help provide creative clarity.

Reason 4: Pitch Deck Design is the Start of Marketing Your Film

The industry is shifting. In a recent article on indie films and profitability in Filmmaker Magazine, the researchers showed that self distribution is the number one way to ensure you at least break even on your project. This means that you, as the filmmaker get to figure out getting eyeballs on the screen to watch your film or show. Being able to create interesting graphics for your film will help it stand out at festivals and on social media.
